LANAP FAQ's - Ivanhoe Dental Group

What is LANAP?

LANAP (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure) is a new treatment that uses cutting-edge laser technology to remove only the gum tissue that has become infected, promoting regeneration of healthy tissue surrounding the teeth.

How Does LANAP Work?

During the LANAP treatment, a laser with an exactly calibrated wavelength is used to remove the infected gingival tissue around the tooth root. The procedure helps to kill bacteria and assists the blood vessels in the area to properly clot. This forms a healthy and stable environment where the gum tissue can attach back to the tooth.

What Are the Advantages of Lanap Compared to Traditional Gum Surgery?

LANAP offers several advantages over traditional gum surgeries, which involve cutting and suturing the gum tissue. Here are some of the advantages of LANAP in the treatment of periodontal diseases:

  • A Minimally Invasive Method

LANAP uses laser precision to remove only the affected tissue. Traditional surgeries require cutting into healthy tissue to remove the diseased areas. This method is less invasive and more effective than the traditional methods and is especially good at avoiding unnecessary trauma to the area.

  • Reducing Pain and Discomfort

Because it does not require cutting or suturing the gums, patients generally feel less pain during and after LANAP. This also makes recovery much more comfortable.

  • A Faster and Easier Recovery

Laser technology is used in LANAP to promote faster healing of gum tissue. The patients can often resume their normal routines within one day. This is in contrast to traditional gum surgery which could take longer than a week. This rapid recovery is a result of less trauma to gum tissues and the laser's capability of promoting blood clotting.

  • Reduced Bleeding and Swelling

The laser in LANAP cauterizes while it cuts. This reduces the bleeding significantly during the procedure. This is especially beneficial to patients on blood thinners, or those with a history of bleeding disorders. The reduced trauma to gums also results in a significant reduction of swelling.

  • Reduced Infection Risk

Laser sterilization reduces the chance of infection after the procedure. The traditional gum surgery that involves extensive sutures and cutting can lead to an increased susceptibility to infection during the healing process.

  • Improved Long-term Results

The LANAP procedure not only eliminates the infection but also stimulates the growth of supporting tissues and bone surrounding the teeth. Traditional gum surgery cannot directly duplicate this regeneration potential. This can improve the stability and longevity of natural teeth.

  • Improved Precision

Lasers allow for very precise targeting without damaging healthy tissue. This precision allows for greater preservation of gum and bone structure.

How Long Is the Procedure?

Details of the Procedure:

  • Initial Assessment & Setup: Every session starts with a preparatory phase that includes sterilizing the area and administering local anesthesia for comfort during the procedure. This first phase takes approximately 30 minutes.
  • Laser Treatment: The time it takes to perform the laser treatment depends on how many teeth are affected and the severity of the periodontal pocketing. Laser application takes between 1 and 2 hours for most patients. The laser is carefully moved around each tooth to remove bacteria and diseased tissue.

  • Sealing and Cleaning: The teeth are cleaned and smoothed of calculus after the diseased tissue is removed. This step not only reduces the chance of further bacterial infection but also helps to reattach the gums. The cleaning and sealing procedure usually takes 30 minutes to an hour.
  • Review of Post-Procedure: After the procedure, your dentist will review all areas treated, give immediate instructions for post-op, and discuss what you can expect during the healing period. This last step takes between 15 and 30 minutes.

Can Anyone with Gum Disease Have LANAP?

LANAP can be an excellent treatment option for patients suffering from periodontal diseases. However, not all are candidates. A comprehensive evaluation is required by our dentists to determine if LANAP will be the best treatment option for your condition and medical history.

How Should I Prepare for LANAP?

Patients should maintain good oral hygiene before undergoing LANAP. In coordination with your physician, they may also need to stop taking certain medications, such as blood clotting agents. These and other preparation steps will be discussed in a pre-treatment consultation.
